What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontic is a branch of dentistry that aligns teeth and corrects jaw that are not positioned properly. Incorrectly positioned teeth can affect a person’s appearance and confidence. It can also make it much harder to keep clean, cause early tooth lost due to decay and periodontal disease, cause extra stress on chewing muscles that can lead to headaches and TMJ syndrome.
Do I need Orthodontics?
If you are unsatisfied with your smile or you suspect that your bite is unfavourable, then going to your local dentist or orthodontist for a full assessment is recommended. Based on your concerns along with full records which included medical and dental history, clinical exam, plaster models of your teeth, x-rays and photographs the dentist or orthodontist can then decide whether braces are recommended for you.
How does Orthodontics realign jaws and teeth?
How we align the teeth can only be determined after a thorough examination of the jaw and teeth. Teeth alignment can be accomplished in several ways:
Dental braces – The combination of brackets which are bonded to each individual tooth, and an archwire which connects each bracket allows gentle pressure to be applied to each tooth causing controlled tooth movement.
Removable appliance – Small appliances are sometimes used to do corrections which can not be accomplished with braces alone. These are often used at the beginning and finished off with conventional braces.
Retainers – After the teeth are aligned, a retainer is provided to ensure that the teeth do not begin to move back toward their original positions.
How long does it take?
The duration of Orthodontic treatment depends on multiple factors. These factors are determined during the treatment planning stage. Once all the information is gathered the dentist or orthodontist can then give you a estimation of how long it will take.

After a thorough examination Dr. James Au carefully explained to her the options she has and the process involved.
