What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final molars on the upper and lower jaw. These tend to first appear in late teens or early twenties and usually for most people there are a set of 4 wisdom teeth. If these wisdom teeth are healthy and properly aligned, then they can be a valuable asset to the mouth. However, for most people they are misaligned and require removal.

When is Removal required?

When wisdom teeth are misaligned they can cause a number of issues which can lead to permanent damage. Sometimes these damages can be resolved after the removal of the wisdom teeth, however in some cases it may lead to more extensive work required. This is why early detection and treatment is highly recommended so that it reduces risk of further problems.

  1. Inflammation and infection
  2. Overcrowding
  3. Damage to Nearby Teeth
  4. Cysts or Tumours
  5. Difficult to Keep Clean

How do I know if I have Wisdom teeth that require removal?

Routine dental check up allows your dentist to inspect the mouth for wisdom teeth. If your
dentist suspects a problem then he may recommend further investigation with x-rays to determine the severity of the problem. From this x-ray, the dentist can then determine the best timing for having the wisdom teeth out.
